Neural correlates of aesthetic experience in art

Abstract

The present thesis discusses the results of studies on neuroesthetics, which were aimed at unfolding the basic mechanisms and processes underpinning the aesthetic experience for art and, in particular, its hedonic dimension. The type of art we considered is visual using, as main stimulus, the human body. Two studies were conducted using the functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) technique and two studies using the eye-tracking technique. The main results of our neuroimaging studies suggest that the hedonic character of one’s aesthetic experience is underpinned by the activation of a brain network, which includes cortical areas encoding the physical properties of the stimuli and, crucially, the right anterior insula. Interestingly, the direct comparison between brain activations during the aesthetic judgment of art stimuli (Classical sculptures) and of biological non-art stimuli (photographs of young athletes) further showed that the hedonic value of aesthetic experience, hallmarked by insula activation, is peculiar for artworks, distinguishing it from the aesthetic evaluation of non-art material.

La presente tesi discute i risultati di diversi studi che hanno trattato il tema della neuroestetica, una disciplina recente che indaga i correlati neurali dell’esperienza estetica associata all’arte. Il tipo di arte che abbiamo trattato è quella visiva utilizzando, come stimolo, il corpo umano. Due studi sono stati condotti utilizzando la tecnica della risonanza magnetica funzionale (fMRI) e due utilizzando la tecnica di registrazione dei movimenti oculari, eye-tracking. In questi studi abbiamo indagato, da un punto di vista cognitivo e neuro-anatomico, i processi che mediano l’esperienza estetica nell’arte e, in particolare, la sua dimensione edonistica. I dati principali dei nostri studi di suggeriscono che il piacere estetico è caratterizzato dall’attivazione di una rete neurale che include la codifica delle proprietà fisiche degli stimoli e, in particolare, l’insula anteriore destra. Il confronto diretto tra le attivazioni durante il giudizio estetico di stimoli artistici (sculture classiche) e di stimoli biologici non artistici (fotografie di giovani atleti) ha inoltre mostrato che l’attivazione del settore dorsale dell’insula anteriore è specifico per le opere d’arte. I risultati di questi studi favoriscono quindi l'ipotesi che il valore edonistico dell’esperienza estetica per l’arte ha una qualità propria, diversa da quella che caratterizza il giudizio estetico di stimoli non artistici.
