Cohesive debonding of a stiffener from an elastic substrate

Title: Cohesive debonding of a stiffener from an elastic substrate
Authors: Royer-Carfagni, Gianni; Franco, Annalisa
Abstract: To strengthen concrete or masonry, a modern technique uses adherent strips made of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP). A model problem for this is here considered, represented by an elastic stiffener pulled at one end, in adhesive contact with an elastic half space in generalized plane stress. An analytical solution is developed under the hypothesis `a la Baranblatt that cohesive adhesion forces remain active between the two materials when relative slip occurs (provided this is less than a critical value), so that the stress singularity predicted by the theory of elasticity in the case of perfect bonding is removed. We find that the bond length beyond which no further increase of strength could be achieved, referred to as the effective bond length, coincides in practice with the ultimate length of the cohesive zone, i.e., its maximal extension prior that the critical slip limit is attained. The debonding process in a pull-out experiment is analyzed in detail. Results are in better agreement with experimental data than those obtainable with traditional models, which neglect as a rule the deformation of the substrate

Energetic Balance in the Debonding of a Reinforcing Stringer: Effect of the Substrate Elasticity

Title: Energetic Balance in the Debonding of a Reinforcing Stringer: Effect of the Substrate Elasticity
Authors: Royer-Carfagni, Gianni; Franco, Annalisa
Abstract: An effective way to strengthen deteriorated concrete or masonry structures is to glue to them, at critical regions, strips or plates made of Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP). The reliability of this technique depends upon interfacial adhesion, whose performance is usually evaluated through an energetic balance, assuming that the support is rigid. The present study analyzes the contact problem between reinforcement and substrate, both assumed to be linear elastic. The solution of the resulting integro-differential equations is expressed in terms of Chebyshev polynomials. A generalization to this problem of the Crack Closure Integral Method developed by Irwin allows to calculate the energy release rate associated with the debonding of the stiffener. Energetic balance `a la Griffith emphasizes the role played by the length of the stiffener and the deformation of the substrate, predicting load vs. displacement curves that, in agreement with experimental measurements, exhibit a snap-back phase.

Enhanced Effective Thickness of Multi-Layered Laminated Glass

Title: Enhanced Effective Thickness of Multi-Layered Laminated Glass
Authors: Galuppi, Laura; Royer-Carfagni, Gianni
Abstract: The stiffness and strength of laminated glass, a composite of glass layers bonded together by polymeric interlayers, depend upon shear coupling between the glass plies through the polymer. In the design practice, this effect is commonly considered by defining the effective thickness, i.e., the thickness of a monolith with equivalent bending properties. Traditional formulations have been proposed for a package of two layers of glass and one polymeric interlayer, but their extrapolation to a higher number of layers gives in general inaccurate results. Here, the recently-proposed Enhanced Effective Thickness method is extended to the case of laminated glass beams composed i) by three layers of glass of arbitrary thickness, or ii) by an arbitrary number of equally-thick glass layers. Comparison with numerical experiments confirms the accuracy of the proposed approach.

Title: Light in the city
Authors: Visentin, Chiara
Editors: Niglio, Olimpia
Abstract: Happens a few years in Turin, Naples, Salerno, and in Lecce, that lighting installations of a group of artists
take possession of city centres public space during night hours. Through public art new roles invest urban places favouring the encounter and interaction among different components of the complex social context of contemporary cities, increasingly multi-ethnic places. Light, through its many contemporary and artistic styles, manages to be dynamic element shared with the audience, encouraging an ethnic and
identitary strengthening at the same time. The experiential atmosphere of the artistic nocturnal artificial lights uniforms the migrant, the inhabitant, the tourist, the unexpected: all of them recognize the same
universal value of beauty, leaving generational and cultural superstructure. The research presents the longstanding experience of Luci d’Artista in Turin, the projects Illuminando and Luminaria of Lecce and Naples, ending with the significant artistic experiment Re Place in the city of L'Aquila, where contemporary
art has intervened insisting that the historical and cultural heritage of the city is a common good not to be forgotten.

Authors: Visentin, Chiara
Editors: Guarino, Angelo
Abstract: The “artificial” landscape of Po Valley is the result of the evolution of many elements which have contributed to its formation: water, soil, cultivations, structures of drainage, daily action and presence of man. If we read it “from above” we understand a map not only “real”, but also “cultural”: a unicum composed of many identities. Identities like artificial canals, hydraulic architectures, water basins become points of attraction in the itinerary made accessible
by Consorzio di Bonifica dell’Emilia centrale for a multidisciplinary audience.
Here it is presented the valorisation project carried out with specific interventions developed on six stages spread over the territory of Po Valley, on architectural spaces, natural landscapes, museum fruition, service systems. The itinerary has been planned carefully studying objectives and expected results, monitoring system, sustainability and
replicability, relation to local communities, communication aspects.

borghesia poteva ambire.

Title: Ritratti di paesaggio emiliano. La Vera fotografia di Luigi Ghirri, Giovanni Chiaramonte, Nino Migliori
Authors: Visentin, Chiara

Title: PROGETTO TERREMOTO. UN INNOVATIVO LUOGO DI RELAZIONE GIOVANILE A SALEMI. QUANDO LA CULTURA RICOSTRUISCE UNA SOCIALITÀ PERDUTA
Authors: Visentin, Chiara
Abstract: Most of social problems of Southern Italy seem unsolvable. The recent establishment of the new Municipal administration (mayor Vittorio Sgarbi) of the Sicilian town of Salemi appeared to be more of a hype that a concrete reality in order to bring positive influences in a South now imbued with civic,
employment, environmental and architectural troubles. By analyzing a specific
initiative of the Creativity Department, still in full development, called
Earthquake Project, we find that few public rules adopted by the management are very successful, not just media boutade. From August 2008 until now, and
again for an indefinite period, the Arabic Norman castle of Salemi and the nearby square Alicia are made available as a creative headquarters for young people to participate in a cultural renewal of the South, starting from art, through photography, graphics, video/film, crafts, theatre, music, architecture and archaeology. Under the motto, indeed much advertising (it’s no coincidence that behind this there’s the art director Oliviero Toscani), creativity, rather than the brick, must be the basis for the reconstruction of Salemi, the initiative has actually shown an interesting training value, underlying pedagogical issues, modern and innovative participation, public-private attendance, student-teacher matches, social redemption, pedagogy of space environment, location in a
context of art and architecture high-quality. A method of management of public affairs through various and contemporary forms of communication art.

Title: La costruzione di un “paesaggio invisibile”. I segni ambientali e architettonici costruiti dalla bonifica emiliana
Authors: Visentin, Chiara
Abstract: Il paesaggio “artificiale” della Pianura Padana è il risultato dell’evoluzione di elementi che hanno concorso alla sua formazione: acque, suolo, coltivazioni, cascine, mulini, manufatti della bonifica,
azione quotidiana dell’uomo.

Title: CASA CATTANEO. DIVINA PROPORZIONE DELLA FUNZIONE. LA CASA D’AFFITTO SUL LAGO A CERNOBBIO, 1938-39
Authors: Visentin, Chiara
Abstract: An ideal home derived by a perfect geometry. The rigor of lightness, the theme of transparency and vertical distribution: proportion and perfection that are explained in all the scales and details: from the handle to the internal layout, from the wise use of solids and voids, to the materials. A corollary of all compositive aspects. The house for rent, located on Como lake, was designed, between 1938 and ’39, by Cesare Cattaneo, rationalist architect from Como, just 3 years later his diploma in architecture at Milan Polytechnic. Being owned by himself, he can experiment freely, “without succumbing to the tyrannical desire of clients”, his enthusiasm for details. It is a small apartments building for the middle class, an ideal field to test a number of problems of composition and technology: from distribution to the location on the environment, from the cost to the good keeping in time, providing us, with a structure still well preserved, an innovative study of Modern solutions. The house stands on a site alongside a short distance from anonymous dwellings. The initial choice was therefore to communicate a violent conflict with the closer existing architectures, claimed the right to belong Modern architecture inside of city centers. Although the natural context of the lake, the visual cones, the broad urban environment are subtly understood inside the project, Cattaneo wants, with his architecture, to give an innovative element for the place, with characteristics that could almost be described as a monumental modernism.
